01 — About us / Nosotros

More than
a food pantry

We started in 2016 with a folding table outside a Pilsen church and a pot of caldo. Today La Despensa is Chicago's most loved Latino-led pantry — part mercado, part cocina, part community living room.

Volunteers at work
Our roots

Born in Pilsen, raised by Chicago

La Despensa was founded by Mexican and Puerto Rican mothers who were tired of expired cans and long lines with no dignity. We built something different: fresh cilantro, jalapeños, tortillas, culturally familiar food, music, cafecito, and abrazos. From one site we grew to three weekly distributions plus home delivery for seniors.

We serve Pilsen, Little Village, Back of the Yards, Cicero and beyond — Black, Brown, immigrant, and working-class families who deserve fresh food without interrogation.

06 — FAQ

Questions? Claro.

Do I need ID or proof of income? →

No. Never. We don't ask for ID, Social Security, immigration status, or pay stubs. Just tell us how many people are in your household so we pack enough.

How often can I come?

Every week! Mercado Fresco Tue–Fri, Mercado Sabatino on Saturdays. Many families come twice a week — once for produce, once for staples.

What kind of food do you have? Is it culturally familiar?

Yes — we order for our community: maseca, dried beans, rice, tortillas, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapeños, plantains, yuca, plus milk, eggs, chicken and seasonal fruit. Vegetarian, halal and diabetic options always.

Can I volunteer if I also receive food?

Absolutely — most of our best volunteers started as clients. Shifts are 2–4 hours, no English required, kids 12+ welcome with parent. You get a volunteer box + lunch.

Do you deliver?

Yes, free delivery Thursdays for seniors 65+, disabled neighbors and new moms in 60608, 60623, 60609 and 60632. Use the contact form below to join the route.

How are donations used?

$1 = 4 meals. 92 cents of every dollar goes directly to food, diapers and kitchen costs. We rescue 60% of our produce that would otherwise be wasted.

"No me piden papeles, me dan abrazo y comida fresca. Mis hijos comen verduras ahora."

— Maria G., Little Village, mom of 4

"It's like shopping at a little mercado, not a charity line. I bring my neighbor every Friday."

— Denise W., Back of the Yards

"I came for food after losing my job. Now I volunteer every Saturday. This place saved me."

— José L., Pilsen volunteer
